FAYETTEVILLE — Fifteen teams who advanced to the postseason a year ago highlight a challenging 2013-14 schedule for the University of Arkansas women’s basketball team, head coach Tom Collen announced today. The 2013-14 schedule has Arkansas playing 18 games against teams who reached either the NCAA or WNIT Tournaments last year and the Razorbacks have expanded their games against regional teams renewing several border rivalries this season. “We have put together another strong schedule for the 2013-14 women’s basketball season,” Collen said. “We play 11 different teams who advanced to last year’s NCAA Tournament for 13 games this year and face four other teams for six games against programs who went to the WNIT. Our non-conference schedule includes four NCAA Tournament teams in Middle Tennessee State, Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Kansas, all of whom will test our young team early in the season. Kansas has made back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances and Oral Roberts and Tulsa both gave us great games on their home courts last year.
“I think our fans will enjoy some of the regional match ups with teams like Missouri State, Oral Roberts and Tulsa and they will also be treated to home SEC games with Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Missouri just to name a few,” Collen added. Arkansas’ season opens with six consecutive home games and an exhibition game beginning with Nov. 3 with Missouri Southern in a season tune-up. The Razorbacks host an Elementary Day game welcoming Sam Houston State Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. in the first official game of the season.
Those games kick off a string of seven home dates in a row that includes Oral Roberts, Furman, Middle Tennessee State, Missouri State and Western Michigan in November. Long-time Razorback fans will welcome back the border rival Bears of Missouri State Nov. 22. Arkansas defeated Missouri State two seasons ago in the teams’ most recent meeting to advance in WNIT action.
Arkansas then hits the road for its longest road swing of the season traveling first to the New Mexico Tournament Nov. 29-30, facing Southeast Missouri, New Mexico and Binghampton. The road stand continues at Kansas Dec. 4.
The Razorbacks wrap up the non-conference portion of the schedule hosting Northwestern State, Tulsa and Tennessee Tech before the holiday break and Mississippi Valley State before beginning the SEC schedule in January.
Arkansas has eight home SEC games beginning with South Carolina Jan. 2. Mississippi State follows Jan. 12, followed by Ole Miss Jan. 19, Auburn Feb. 2, Florida Feb. 6, Alabama Feb. 13, Vanderbilt Feb. 20 concluding with Missouri March 2. Auburn reached the quarterfinals of the WNIT while Florida advanced to the semifinals before being eliminated. The Razorbacks make SEC road trips to Missouri Jan. 5, Florida, Jan. 9, Georgia Jan. 16, Kentucky Jan. 26, Tennessee Jan. 30, South Carolina Feb. 9, LSU Feb. 23 and Texas A&M Feb. 27. Tennessee Georgia and Kentucky all reached regional finals in the NCAA Tournament last season while LSU was a regional participant as well.
