AUBURN, ALA. — The University of Arkansas swimming and diving team opens the 2011-12 season on the road Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Auburn University at 4 p.m.
The Razorbacks finished the 2010-11 season with a 9-2 dual meet record including 2-1 in the Southeastern Conference, earning a College Swimming Coaches Association of America final ranking of No. 24. Auburn went 5-0 in dual meets, and finished with a No. 4 CSCAA ranking, including an eighth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships.
Arkansas and Auburn have not faced each other in a dual meet since 2007. Wednesday’s meet will be in a 13-event format.
The Razorbacks, who host Florida Oct. 20 in their second meet of the year, are the only team in the country to open their season with back-to-back meets against SEC opponents who finished in the top ten at the 2011 NCAA Championships.
The 2011-12 Razorbacks welcome the return of All-American swimmer Chelsea Franklin, as well as SEC All-Freshman diving team honoree Kesha Naylor. Eight current Razorbacks have qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.
Head Coach Jeff Poppell says his team will not shy away from the tough competition to start the season.
"That’s the caliber of competition we have to be comfortable and confident racing against for our team to finish as high as we want to," Poppell said. "We will compete at championship meets against competition that will be no better than either one of those programs."
