FAYETTEVILLE – Head coach Chris Bucknam and the University of Arkansas men’s track and field team has announced the signing of Aaron Allen to a National Letter of Intent for the 2011-12 season. Allen is the sixth member of the Razorbacks’ current recruiting class. This marks the third Razorback recruiting class for Bucknam and his staff.
"We are excited about adding Aaron to our class," Bucknam said. "He has great range in a variety of events with exceptional skills in the 800. That 800-meter crew is a strong part of our program. Aaron is going to make a solid group even better."
Allen, a native of McKinney, Texas, specializes in the 400 and 800 meters on the track. As a member of the Boyd High School track and field team, Allen broke school records in the 400 meters, 800 meters and as a member of the Broncos’ distance-medley relay. He is a three-time regional qualifier in the 800 meters and advanced to the state championships as a junior. In addition to his prowess on the track, Allen was the District 8-5A champion in cross country.
With the Texas Stars track club in Dallas, Allen ran to third-place result in the 800 meters at the USATF National meet. He has also been part of the two-time national championship 4×800-meter relay at the USATF and AAU national events. Through the first few weeks of his senior season, Allen holds personal bests of 49.4 in the 400 meters and 1:52.9 in the 800 meters.
Adding to the Razorbacks’ already-stellar signing class for the 2011-12, Allen joins Kyle Dunn (Marion, Iowa), Andrew Irwin (Mt. Ida, Ark.), Anthony May II (Hoover, Ala.), Gunnar Nixon (Edmond, Okla.) and Devin Randall (Bartlesville, Okla.). This group includes the No. 1-ranked prep decathlete in 2010 (Nixon, top-ranked pole vaulter (Irwin) and second-ranked 400-meter hurdler (Dunn).
