Red tops White behinds Wade’s 18

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Freshman Mardracus Wade of the University of Arkansas men’s basketball team scored 18 points to lead the Red team to a 38-19 win in the annual Red-White scrimmage at Bud Walton Arena on Friday night.

A close game from the outset, Wade’s shooting, 5-of-8 from three-point range, separated the Red squad from their competition. In fact, Wade buried back-to-back-to-back three-point baskets in a span of one minute on the clock and then hit three free throws to outscore the White squad 12-2 on his own.

"We haven’t seen Mardracus shoot like that so far," Arkansas head coach John Pelphrey said.

Also impressive was junior college transfer Marvell Waithe who led all rebounders with nine boards including four on the offensive end of the floor. Playing for the Red team, Waithe tallied seven points, was credited with an assist and a block and did not turn the ball over.

"Marvell is getting stronger and stronger," Pelphrey said. "Nine rebounds is very good on any night."

The Red team consisted of Wade, Waithe, Julysses Nobles, Michael Sanchez, Nick Mason and Razorback assistant coach Brett Nelson. The squad shot 37.5 percent from the field, but an impressive 41.2 percent from three-point range and missed just one of their eight free throws.

Leading the way for the White squad was senior Delvon Johnson who scored six points and grabbed five rebounds. Fellow senior Jemal Farmer also tallied six points for White while Arkansas’ other senior Marcus Britt led all players with four assists.

A crowd of more than 3,200 people were on hand to watch the Red-White game on the eve of the Arkansas football team’s game with Ole Miss and Pelphrey and his players appreciated the attendance for a scrimmage.

"This game is really important to our players," Pelphrey added. "What makes Arkansas so special is the fans. Our players know that they play in an environment where the crowd can affect visiting teams."

The Razorbacks continue with practice on Saturday as they prepare for their first exhibition contest of the season on Saturday, Nov. 6 against LeMoyne-Owen College.
