Redlicki Battles Through To Semifinals

Updated Singles Draw

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Mike Redlicki stormed back for the 0-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Wake Forest’s Petros Chrysochos, his second win of the day Friday, and now advances to tomorrow’s semifinals at the ITA/USTA National Indoor Championships.

Redlicki began the day with a 7-6 (8), 6-4 win over Ole Miss’ Gustav Hansson, the No. 18 player in the nation, in the Round of 16. Redlicki won 74 of 136 total points, including three of six break points, and finished with 10 aces.

After dropping that first set to Chrysochos, the No. 8 player in the nation, Redlicki converted four break points and had his serve only broken once, winning 62 of the final 103 total points, over the second and third sets.

Leading 5-4 in the third set, Redlicki had his serve broken for the first time since the first set, only to break back to regain a 6-5 advantage, and then served out the match. He finished with six aces, all in the third set, including two in the final game of the match.

“Mike continues to beat elite-level guys and prove to be an elite-level guy himself with his play this fall,” head coach Andy Jackson said. “The match with Petros was intense and well-played, and Mike played really tough and smart. It’s a great honor for him to advance to the semifinals at this tournament and it will present a great challenge tomorrow.”

The other Razorback in action, Jose Salazar, saw his tournament run come to an end in the Round of 16, falling to UCLA’s Gage Brymer, the No. 38 player in the nation, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Trailing 2-1 in the third set, Salazar had his serve broken, and that proved to be the difference.

Salazar, the No. 45 player in the nation, finishes the fall with an 11-3 record, including a 4-3 record against ranked opponents and the ITA Central Regional singles title.

“Jose played well again today,” Jackson said. “He had a clear chance to win in his match. He continues to improve and fight every match. He is going to be ranked high after his fall and deservedly so.”

Redlicki will face Georgia Tech’s Christopher Eubanks, the No. 5 player in the nation, in tomorrow’s semifinals at 11 a.m. The final is set for Sunday.
