Redlicki To Play For National Title

Updated Singles Draw

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Mike Redlicki has a chance to make history Sunday. In match decided by two tiebreakers, Redlicki, bested Georgia Tech’s Christopher Eubanks, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (4), in Saturday’s semifinals to advance to Sunday’s final at the ITA/USTA National Indoor Championships.

With the win over the nation’s No. 5 ranked player, Redlicki, the No. 11 ranked player, has now defeated four top-20 opponents in three days, having previously defeated No. 17 Andre Goransson (California), No. 18 Gustav Hansson (Ole Miss) and No. 8 Petros Chrysochos (Wake Forest).

Redlicki advances to face the nation’s top-ranked player, Ohio State’s Mikael Torpegaard, in Sunday’s final at 10 a.m. Torpegaard was the NCAA Singles Championship runner-up this past season and won the Columbus Challenger singles title earlier this fall.

The senior from Chicago, Illinois, is seeking to become the third ITA/USTA National Indoor singles championship in school history, joining Joey Blake (1986) and Chip Hooper (1981).

“Mike played another smart and tough match today in the semifinals,” head coach Andy Jackson said. “Eubanks is a very good player, so it was another excellent result for Mike. Playing for a national championship is a great honor and privilege.

“Torpe is the No. 1 player in the nation and won an ATP Challenger professional event earlier this fall. Mike knows that he will present a big challenge, but he’s excited about the opportunity.”

Down a break, 5-4, in the first set, Redlicki broke back, winning all four points in the game, to even the set at 5-5. Redlicki and Eubanks then both held serve to send the first set to a tiebreaker. Eubanks won the first point, but Redlicki won each of the next seven points to take the set.

In the second set, Redlicki and Eubanks held serve throughout, sending the set into a second tiebreaker. Redlicki broke Eubanks’ serve twice, while holding serve all but once in the tiebreaker, and then served it out for the match.

Redlicki won 80 of 151 total points and finished with eight aces for the match. He also won 83 percent of first points, including 96 percent in the second set.
