GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Arkansas swimming team earned two spots in the Razorback record book and finished sixth in the 800 freestyle relay on the first day of the swimming portion of the Southeastern Conference Championships in Gainesville, Fla.
The 800 free relay team finished sixth overall and picked up 26 points for the Hogs. Katie Witbeck, Sigrun Sverrisdottir, Nicole Menzel and Chelsea Franklin clocked 7:15.49, good enough to put them second in the Arkansas record books.
"We had some great performances," head coach Jeff Poppell said, "but at the same time, things got overshadowed a little bit by the fact that we got disqualified in the first event."
Arkansas’ 200-medley relay team finished the race in ninth place with a time of 1:41.94 before being disqualified from the race.
"It was a disappointing start. We gave up a lot of points and dug ourselves a hole that we are going to have to dig ourselves out of the rest of the meet," Poppell said.
In the first race of the swim portion of the SEC Championships, Julia Kucherich picked up a career-best time in the 200 backstroke and broke into the Arkansas record books with a time of 1:59.89 in a time trial. The freshman’s best time was good for fifth on the all-time records list.
The Razorbacks continue Thursday morning with the prelim session that begins at 9 a.m. CT.
