FAYETTEVILLE – In the October 2011 issue of Track & Field News, the University of Arkansas men’s track and field team earned a second-place finish in the publication’s 55th National Relay Rankings. Based on performances from the 2011 season, the Razorbacks are positioned within the top 10 in six of eight relays used in the rankings.
The Razorbacks are No. 2 in the 4xMile, the team’s highest relay ranking. The team also carries relay rankings of No. 4 in the distance-medley relay, No. 5 in the 4×400- and 4×800-meter relays, No. 7 in the 4×200-meter relay and No. 9 in the sprint-medley relay. Arkansas’ relays also finished second in the annual ranking following the 2009 season.
The Razorbacks, with 34 points, are the highest-ranked team from the Southeastern Conference. Conference mates LSU and Florida are ranked third and seventh, respectively, within the top 10. Texas A&M owns the top spot in the relay ranking.
In 2011, Arkansas picked up outdoor All-America honors in the 4×100- and 4×400-meter relay and indoor accolades in the 4×400 and distance-medley relay. The Razorbacks’ bronze indoor finish in the mile relay was the program’s highest since 1987 and the outdoor All-America honors were Arkansas’ first in the event since the 2000 season.
Events are scored on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (5-4-3-2-1 for the shuttle-hurdle relays) basis. Neither club teams featuring eligible collegians nor pick-up or all-star teams with members who later ran on their real teams were eligible. The U.S. National Teams were also excluded.
