Roberts Zguns Advance at ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. – Arkansas’ contingent advanced Monday at the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla.

Seniors Matt Roberts and Adrians Zguns each posted straight-set victories in the tournament’s qualifying draw. It was the first match of the fall for both Roberts and Zguns.

"It’s a good start for the fall season for Adrians and Matt," Arkansas head coach Robert Cox said. "They played well today and in order for these guys to be successful at this tournament they’ll have to keep playing hard.” Zguns, the nation’s 58th ranked player, knocked off Illinois’ Ruben Gonzales, ranked No. 107, 7-6, 7-6. Zguns will play Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. versus the winner of Tulsa’s Will Grey and Christian Tempke of Northwestern.

Roberts cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory over San Diego State’s Christian Groh. The 73rd-ranked Roberts will continue play tomorrow at 9 a.m. against either Jakob Gustafsson of Louisville or LSU’s Colt Gaston.

The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships marks the first time in two weeks any Hogs have taken the court. Arkansas was scheduled to send several players to the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas and the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas, two weeks ago. The Razorbacks sent six participants to the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md. Sept., 16-18.

We were supposed to play in some tournaments in Texas last week, but we had to cancel after the hurricane (Rita), so it feels good to get on the courts again."
