BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas freshman pitcher Nick Schmidt was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week on Monday after shutting down fourth-ranked Florida on Friday night.
The High Ridge, Mo., native hurled the Razorbacks’ first complete game of the season. He scattered seven hits and allowed just one run to improve to 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in SEC games.
Schmidt struck out seven Gators to tie the second-high strikeout total of his career. He has a 2.45 ERA this season and has only allowed four earned runs over his last 27.1 innings of work. Schmidt leads the Razorbacks in strikeouts (61) and opponent batting average (.216).
The honor is the first of the season for the freshman left-hander and just the second conference player of the week award for the Hogs this season. Tennessee’s J.P. Arencibia was the hitter of the week in the conference after hitting .462 in a sweep of South Carolina.
