Schmidt Named Preseason NCBWA First-Team All-American

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas left-handed pitcher Nick Schmidt headlines the 2007 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-American team.

Schmidt, a junior from St. Louis, Mo., posted a 9-3 record with a 3.01 ERA last season. He pitched 116.2 innings while striking out the second-most batters in a single season in school history (145). Schmidt was also named the SEC Pitcher of the Year and earned numerous All-America accolades as a sophomore.

“I think the country has finally realized what the SEC has know for quite awhile,” Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn said. “Nick Schmidt is one of the best pitchers in the country. He possesses all of the intangibles to be a truly dominating pitcher. All-America honors are just the tip of the iceberg for Nick (Schmidt) this season.”

Schmidt’s 2006 season followed a freshman campaign that earned him Freshman All-America honors with an 8-2 record and 89 strikeouts in 99.2 innings.
