FAYETTEVILLE – One week removed from a team victory in Ohio, the University of Arkansas women’s cross country team returns to the Midwest for the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Friday’s 5K race is scheduled for a 3:15 p.m. (CT) start and will be run on the University of Notre Dame Golf Course. This race will be the team’s first 5K of the season.
"We’ll carry over the momentum of last week into the Notre Dame Invitational this weekend and face even more nationally ranked teams," head coach Lance Harter said. "We just jump out of one fire and back into another. We’re looking forward to some great competition this weekend at Notre Dame."
Arkansas is scheduled to be one of 28 teams in the field at the Notre Dame Invitational. The field features six teams ranked inside the top 30 of the Sept. 27 release of the USTFCCCA national poll, including top-10 teams New Mexico and Florida State. The 18th-ranked Razorbacks will also be up against conference rivals Auburn and Georgia and South Central region foes Baylor, Rice, SMU and Texas A&M.
On the heels of a team title last weekend at the Inter-Regional Bubble Buster, Arkansas jumped to No. 18 in this week’s national rankings. The Razorbacks were previously unranked but receiving votes. Arkansas is the top-ranked Southeastern Conference team in the rankings, ahead of No. 26 Florida and No. 30 Vanderbilt.
When weekly conference honors were announced Tuesday, Stephanie Brown and Jessica Jackson were recognized for their respective performances last week at the Inter-Regional Bubble Buster. Brown was named the SEC Co-Runner of the Week, while Jackson earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors for the second time in as many competitions.
Last season at the Notre Dame Invitational, the Razorbacks ran to a ninth-place team finish. Kristen Gillespie was the team’s top scorer, crossing the finish line in 22nd place overall. She navigated the 5K course in a time of 17:08.
Following their competition at Notre Dame, the Razorbacks return to the course Oct. 15 for the 23rd Annual Chile Pepper Festival at Agri Park in Fayetteville. For more information regarding Razorback cross country or University of Arkansas athletics, please visit ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
