OXFORD, Miss. — After cutting a 10-point second-half deficit to one, Arkansas went more than 11 minutes before its next field goal as Ole Miss pulled away for a 73-54 Southeastern Conference victory on Saturday.
The loss dropped UA to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in the SEC. Ole Miss improved to 12-4 and 3-2.
Arkansas trailed by 11 in the first half and was down 35-25 at the break, thanks in large part to 13 turnovers, and trailed 39-29 with 17:31 left in the game.
Jonathon Modica, who scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the second half, keyed the run with a jumper before Eric Ferguson nailed a three-pointer. Carl Baker found Modica for a layup and a steal by Modica led to a pair of free throws as the Razorbacks closed within 40-38.
A layup by Justin Reed, who led the Rebels with 17 points, pushed the margin to 47-43, but one of three three-pointers by Michael Jones got the Hogs within 47-46 with 12:09 remaining.
Arkansas didn’t make another shot until only 27 seconds remained, a stretch of 11:36, when Modica’s jumper cut a 20-point deficit to 71-53.
After UA sliced the margin to one, Aaron Harper hit a trey for a 50-46 Rebel lead. Despite the scoring lapse, Arkansas was still within seven points, 53-46, with 6:14 remaining. David Sanders hit a free throw, Harper made two free throws and Sanders hit a three-pointer 24 seconds later to give the Rebels a 59-46 lead with 5:36 to play.
Ferguson made three free throws after being fouled on a three-pointer, but Ole Miss scored nine straight points, five by Harper, for a 68-49 lead before a pair of Dionisio Gomez free throws with 1:05 left.
UA shot 47 percent in the first half while holding Ole Miss to 43 percent, and matched the Rebels with one three-point bucket and eight free throws, but due to the 13 turnovers, Ole Miss had 13 more shot attempts and five more made buckets.
In the second period, the Rebels shot 52.6 percent, including 55.6 on threes (5-9), and went to the free throw line 21 times with 13 made shots. UA cut down its turnovers to seven in the second period, but shot just 32 percent.
Jones had 11 points for the Razorbacks while Gomez had a game-high nine rebounds to go with six points. Ferguson had nine points and six rebounds, but he turned the ball over 11 times.
Harper had 14 points for Ole Miss while Sanders and Derrick Allen scored 12 each.
Arkansas is off until Saturday when the Hogs travel to Florida for a noon (central) tilt.
