Seibert Shuts Down Gamecocks; Dugger, Hamblin

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Arkansas freshman right-hander Shaun Seibert quieted the powerful South Carolina lineup and Danny Hamblin and Jake Dugger blasted home runs as the seventh-ranked Razorbacks won 5-3 at Sarge Frye Field Sunday afternoon to take the opening SEC series.
“This is such a hostile place to play; it is tough to win here,” Arkansas Head Coach Dave Van Horn said. “To come in there and win two games is an outstanding job by our players. They are pretty resilient.”
Seibert, an Edwardsville, Ill., native, pitched a career-high seven innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits, lowering his ERA to 1.03 on the season. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.
“He really did a nice job,” Van Horn said. “He did a great job spotting his fastball. He came inside when we needed it, but mostly lived on the outside part of the plate.”
Arkansas improves to 18-2 on the season and 2-1 in SEC play, while the second-ranked Gamecocks fall to 17-3 and 1-2 in the SEC.
USC reliever Jason Fletcher had retired 15 straight Razorback hitters before Casey Rowlett singled with one out in the top of the ninth inning. Dugger then provided two much-needed insurance runs with a home run to left-center field.
South Carolina had cut the lead to 3-1 with a two-out RBI single by Steve Pearce in the sixth inning and pulled to within 3-2 in the eighth inning on a RBI single by Chris Brown off UA reliever Daryl Maday.
Carolina added a run on a RBI ground out to third base in the bottom of the ninth inning, scoring Jon Willard who singled to lead off the inning. But Trey Holloway would come on after the Willard single, and retire three straight for his fourth save of the season.
South Carolina out hit the Hogs six to five, but the Razorbacks beat the Gamecocks at their own game with two home runs to scoring all five runs.
Arkansas’ first home run, a three-run shot by Hamblin, chased the Gamecocks fire-throwing freshman right-hander Wynn Pelzer in the fourth inning.
Pelzer would be charged with three runs (all earned) in 3.2 innings of work. He allowed just two hits and struck out five, but walked two and had thrown 60 pitches.
Senior Casey Rowlett went 2 for 4 on the afternoon, reaching base prior to both home runs. He extended his hitting streak to 19 games and has a .500 (39-of-78) 20 games into the season.
Fletcher allowed two runs on three hits in 5.2 innings of work out of the bullpen for the Gamecocks.
The Hogs travel to Shreveport, La., for the first of two games on Tuesday, March 22, against Centenary.
