BATON ROUGE, La. – Late last night at LSU’s Last Ditch Track Meet the Razorbacks were able to add to their list of NCAA automatic qualifiers as senior Richard Smith posted a season-best mark of 53-4.00 in the triple jump.
“He did a great job to earn that automatic qualification,” Arkansas field events coach Dick Booth said. “It was a quiet meet, so he really had to dig deep down for motivation. Now Richard will have the opportunity to score us points in a critical time at nationals.”
On Smith’s first attempt he jumped 51-7.00, then his second attempt of 53-4.00 was what did the trick and was also good enough to capture first place at the meet. Smith’s previous best jump for the season was a provisional qualifying mark of 51-9.25 at the SEC Championships on March 2.
Junior transfer Jaanus Uudmae is the other Razorback who has earned an automatic qualification in the triple jump. Uudmae posted a jump of 53-3.50 at the SEC Championships as he finished second.
Smith and Uudmae will join 12 other Arkansas athletes that have automatically qualified for the 2003 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held on March 14-15, at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
