Soccer Battles Missouri to 1-1 Tie in Exhibition

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In its final exhibition of the preseason, Arkansas fought from behind and used a goal in the final minutes to earn a 1-1 draw against Missouri Saturday night at Swope Field.

After falling behind the Tigers 1-0 midway through the first half, the Razorbacks hung in there and eventually got the equalizer from Rachel VanFossen in the 87th minute. Assists came from veterans Claire Kelley and Ashleigh Ellenwood.

“Tonight was a much better overall performance,” head coach Colby Hale said. “Mizzou is a very good team. There are some things we can work on, but also lots of positives. We got better today.”

It was essentially an evenly-matched bout between the SEC rivals, but Arkansas continued its aggression in the offensive end, edging Mizzou in attempted shots (15-13), shots on goal (8-6) and corner kicks (9-6).

With the draw, the Razorbacks concluded exhibition play with an undefeated 1-0-1 mark. Kelley notched assists on both of the team’s goals, while keepers Cameron Carter and Jordan Harris split time in the Arkansas net.

Next week begins the regular season for Arkansas, who hosts back-to-back matches on Friday and Sunday at Razorback Field. Stephen F. Austin visits Fayetteville for the opener on Aug. 21, while TCU comes to town on Aug. 23 for what will be the home team’s Break the Attendance Record Challenge match.
