Soccer concludes season Sunday

FAYETTEVILLE – Following a tough loss on Friday night, the University of Arkansas Lady Razorback soccer team must regroup for their final match of the season on Sunday afternoon when they take on the Kentucky Wildcats at Lady’Back Field beginning at noon.

Eliminated from the Southeastern Conference Tournament on Friday night, the Lady Razorbacks will have to be sharp on Sunday if they want to end their season on a high note and send their seniors off with a win to end their careers. Kentucky enters the match having already clinched a spot in the SEC Tournament, but could propel themselves as high as a number two seed with a win in what appears to be the toughest tourney in recent memory.

“Friday night was a disappointing loss,” Arkansas head coach Gordon Henderson said. “We must put that loss behind us and move on. We have several things to play for on Sunday. On that list include a chance to match our all-time single-season win total, have our best record in SEC play and most importantly, letting our seniors end their careers with a win.”

Entering Sunday’s match, Arkansas holds a 10-6-2 overall record and have only taken back-to-back losses one time during the season when it lost to Vanderbilt in double overtime, then Mississippi the following Friday night in late September. Also on the line is a potential school record for playing at Lady’Back Field. The Lady Razorbacks are 5-1-2 on their home pitch this season and an Arkansas victory would exceed Arkansas’ previous best of 6-2-0 which it earned during the first season of Lady’Back Field in 1991.

The Arkansas-Kentucky match is a make up game from mid-September when the two teams met at Lady’Back Field only to have their game postponed due to a thunder storm that rolled through the area. The meeting is the 11th in the all-time series, a series which has been dominated by the Wildcats in terms of wins and losses, but excruciatingly close when looking at the scores. Three of the past five meetings were one-goal affairs, with a fourth ending in a 1-1 tie.
