FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The University of Arkansas soccer team is gearing up for its 2013 campaign. The team reported this past Monday, Aug. 5, and began practice the following day. This year’s edition of the team features 17 returning letterwinners as well as the edition of 13 newcomers. This is the first edition in a four-part series of previews to prepare the fans for this season.
Arkansas will be returning nine offensive forces this season that are responsible for 60 percent of the goals scored in the 2012 season. Junior Jeriann Okoro and sophomore’s Ashleigh Ellenwood and Lindsey Mayo combined for 13 goals last season with 30 shots on goal and many assists.&
“Our speed will definitely be a strength this season,” head coach Colby Hale says. “I think we will have the ability to get behind people, which ultimately has to translate to goals, which is where our focus will be by creating chances and being more efficient.”
Whichever formation Hale sends out this season, he will have depth and experience at all positions. Senior’s Yvonne DesJarlais, Taylor Green and junior Beth Stratton ap experience to the frontline with all recording sufficient field time in their previous seasons.
“Based on the spring I think the returning players have a much better feel on what we are trying to do from a basic attacking stand point,” Hale said. “I think we have some good pieces to be pretty dangerous on the attack.”
Hale and crew are also aping four fresh faces to their attacking squad this season including Claire Kelley, Katherine Moore, Rachel Riggs and McKinzie James.
