Soccer releases spring schedule

FAYETTEVILLE – Fresh off the signing of a very good class for the fall, University of Arkansas head soccer coach Gordon Henderson announced his 2005 spring schedule on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady’Backs begin their potential four game set next weekend with a March 12 match up against Southwest Missouri State in Fayetteville beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Lady Razorbacks won’t play again until April when they meet Memphis on April 2 followed by an alumni match on April 9 and a yet-to-be-determined opponent on the weekend of April 16-17.

“We get to play two very good teams in Southwest Missouri and Memphis this spring,” Henderson said. “I believe that both were ranked higher than we were and they are teams that we had some success with this past fall. When creating the spring schedule I wanted to play someone that would be challenging for us so that we can improve.”

The Lady Razorbacks defeated Southwest Missouri 1-0 last fall in Fayetteville on a second-half goal by senior Jenni Brashear. Taking a cross from Meredith Thompson on a corner kick, Brashear hit a laser of a header from the middle of the net into the upper 90 to score the game’s only goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Carrie Dillsaver also looked very good in the contest, making four saves.

Arkansas’ last meeting with Memphis came during the spring of 2004 where they defeated the Tigers 2-0. In that contest the Lady Razorbacks got their game winner from Morgan McCord and a goal by Brashear.

The second week of April kicks off a long celebration for the University of Arkansas Lady Razorback soccer team as it begins its 20th season of competition in the fall. Alumni from Arkansas’ previous 19 teams have all been invited to return to Fayetteville for the contest.

“The Alumni game is personally very special as it’s the first opportunity that I have to meet and connect with the women who were the foundation of Arkansas soccer,” Henderson said. “This fall is the 20th year of Arkansas soccer and that’s exciting. It gives our alumni an opportunity to get back on campus and see what they created. I’m very big on traditions and the alumni are the cornerstone of what we have here.”

Arkansas’ spring season is scheduled to conclude on the weekend of April 16-17 with a yet-to-be-determined opponent. Details of the contest will be announced when available. For more information about Lady Razorback soccer or about the University of Arkansas visit www.ladybacks.com.
