FAYETTEVILLE – Ten home games, including six Southeastern Conference contests and two non-conference matchups against Big 12 Conference members, highlight the 2011 University of Arkansas soccer schedule, which was released on Tuesday.
The Razorbacks had just seven home games last year, but third-year head coach Erin Aubry and her 13 returning letterwinners have 10 games this year at Razorback Field, which features a recently expanded and renovated locker room facility. Ten home games, counting an exhibition, are the most for the Razorbacks since 2007 when Arkansas had 11.
"We are very excited to have a heavy home schedule this year," Aubry says. "Our fans are the best to play in front of and with the added benefit of a new locker room facility, we want to be in it as often as possible. We have added some new opponents to the schedule and that always provides great anticipation."
Two of the top five crowds in program history were recorded last year when 1,139 attended the Oct. 21 game against South Carolina and 1,090 attended the Oct. 8 game against Vanderbilt. The figure against USC is the fourth-best in program history while the total against Vanderbilt is fifth-best.
The season gets underway Aug. 13 when Oklahoma of the Big 12 Conference visits Fayetteville for a 7 p.m. exhibition game.
Arkansas opens the regular season against Southern Methodist, a member of Conference USA, at 7 p.m. on Aug. 19 before three straight games against members of the Big 12. Arkansas goes to Kansas on Aug. 21, plays host to Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. on Aug. 28 and travels to Nebraska on Sept. 2.
The Razorbacks play host to Missouri State at 7 p.m. on Sept. 6 before the team travels to Colorado Springs, Colo., for a pair of games on Sept. 16 against Air Force and Sept. 18 against host Colorado College.
"We have a lot of players from both Texas and Oklahoma on our roster, so it seemed fitting to add SMU, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to our nonconference schedule," Aubry says. "Additionally, Kansas, Colorado College and Nebraska are new opponents for Arkansas soccer. They are all quality teams and will be great experience for us heading into our typically tough SEC schedule. We have a lot of freshman on the roster this season who need competitive experience quickly and we feel this schedule certainly provides that."
Aubry’s team opens SEC play with four consecutive home games beginning Sept. 23 with a 7 p.m. tilt against Ole Miss. Mississippi State is in town for a 1 p.m. game on Sept. 25 followed by a 7 p.m. game against Georgia on Sept. 30 and a 1 p.m. contest against Tennessee on Oct. 2.
Four straight league road games follow, including Oct. 7 at Kentucky, Oct. 9 at Vanderbilt, Oct. 14 at Alabama and Oct. 16 at Auburn.
Arkansas closes the regular season with two of its final three games at home, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. against Florida and Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. against LSU around the Oct. 23 road game at South Carolina. The SEC Tournament is set for Nov. 2-6 in Orange Beach, Ala.
