Softball releases 2012 schedule

FAYETTEVILLE- University of Arkansas head softball coach Mike Larabee has released the schedule for the 2012 season. This year the Razorbacks will play in four non-conference tournaments, two being held at Bogle Park, followed by an array of competitive conference match-ups. The season will kick off in early February with the Baylor Tournament, held in Waco, Texas on Feb. 11-12. The Razorbacks will face Belmont, Baylor and Wichita State to begin their 2012 campaign. They travel to Tampa, Fla., for the South Florida Tournament on Feb. 17-19 where they will take on Georgia Southern, Drake, USF and Wisconsin. Coach Larabee and the Razorbacks begin their home schedule when they host back-to-back tournaments at Bogle Park. The play begins with the Arkansas Softball Invitational on Feb. 24-26. The Razorbacks face Northwestern State, Tennessee State, and Jackson State. The weekend of March 3-4, Arkansas plays, host to the Woo Pig Classic which includes Butler, Drake and IUPUI. "When I set up our non-conference schedule this year I wanted to make sure that we put ourselves in the position that we could be successful," Larabee said. "Our conference is so strong that I wanted to make sure we had good balance in our schedule. With a young team I think it is really important that we get off to a good, strong start and get used to winning. I think if we play to our potential we could go into the Southeastern Conference with a winning record and feeling really good at where we are at." Conference play begins at home with a doubleheader against Ole Miss on March 7, following a road trip to Columbia, S.C., where the team will take on the Gamecocks at Beckham Field the weekend of March 9-11. After the series at South Carolina, the Razorbacks head home for 10 straight games. The slate of games include a border battle against Missouri, March 14, a series against Tennessee, March 16-18, a double header versus Murray State, March 20, a series with Florida, March 23-25 and finally a matchup against Tulsa on March 28. The Razorbacks then travel south to Louisiana to take on the Tigers of LSU, March 30 – April 1 and return home for a series against Mississippi State April 6-8.

Arkansas next travels north to Kentucky for a double header against the Wildcats on April 11, and then returns home the same week for two non-conference match-ups where they play host to Tennessee-Martin on April 14-15 and UMKC on April 17. UA returns to conference play on April 20-22 with a series against Auburn being played in Auburn, Ala. Following the series at Auburn, Arkansas continues its road trip on April 25 playing at Tulsa. The Razorbacks close out their 2012 home campaign with a series against Alabama on April 27-29. In the final stretch of the season the Razorbacks will be on the road with a game at Missouri State on May 2 and then their final series in Athens, Ga., on May 5-6, to take on the Georgia Bulldogs. The 2012 SEC Tournament is set to take place on May 10-12 in Tuscaloosa, Ala."The SEC is a very competitive conference, probably the toughest in the country," Larabee said. "I feel really good going into the season and I believe that with this year’s squad we are capable of beating anyone in the SEC and our non SEC competition."

Following the conference tournament, the NCAA Tournament takes off with regional and super-regional rounds to be played in various cities around the country. The NCAA softball season comes to a momentous close with the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., which takes place May 31- June 6.
