Southwest Missouri Downs Hogs 3-2

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Southwest Missouri State held off a late-inning rally to give the Razorbacks a 3-2 loss in the second day of the UTA/Dallas Morning News Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Arkansas drops to 3-1 on the season, while the Bears improve to 1-1. Razorback starter Charlie Isaacson pitched five innings giving up one earned run on four hits while striking out six. Isaacson’s record stands at 0-1 with the loss.
Southwest Missouri starter Brad Ziegler went seven innings allowing two runs on five hits while recording 12 strikeouts to move to 1-0.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after Shaun Markum doubled to open the inning. Jeremy Isenhower singled to give the Bears runners on first and third with one out.
Tony Piazza singled to left to score Markum and move Isenhower to second. Randyn Saner single behind the second base bag, but shorstop Scott Bridges’ throw sailed over first base to allow Isenhower to score for a 2-0 Bears’ lead.
Greg Mathis walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Mathis then moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Markum’s squeeze play to stake SMS to a 3-0 lead.
The Razorbacks finally got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning. Nick Pitts drove in Andrew Wishy and Michael Conner who each singled to make it a 3-2 game with only one out in the inning.
Ziegler, however, retired Brett Hagedorn and pinch-hitter Brady Toops to end the scoring threat.
The Razorbacks did not threaten in the eighth or ninth as Bob Zimmerman retired Ryan Fox and Pitts to earn the save.
The Hogs will finish play at the UTA Invitational on Sunday with a 3 p.m. game against Texas-Arlington. ARSN goes on the air at 2:40 p.m.
