Stan Heath Press Conference – Georgia
BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas plays host to No. 20 Georgia (9-4, 1-1) Saturday in a 5:05 p.m. game televised by SEC-TV (Fox Sports Southwest in Arkansas). The Razorbacks and Bulldogs have both been off since Saturday. UA (5-8, 0-2) is coming off the 52-37 loss to Auburn.
“Georgia is very good. (Jarvis) Hayes and Ezra Williams are two of the better scorers in the league, and Hayes is a leading candidate for Player of the Year. We have to take away their transition game and limit them. We have to do a good job blocking out and rebounding. They push the ball. They are very skilled. Their guys are very interchangeable and they score in different ways. They have guys who can score in bunches.
“We’re not pushing the panic button. This is a difficult position for this group and they are handling it as well as it can be handled. We’re defending very well.”
“In the last few days, we’ve tried to speed up the pace and get into the flow on offense. We’ve worked on our cutting, better ball movement, drawing some help and kicking out, and just scoring. We have to do it collectively and it didn’t happen in our last game.
“I want us to take good shots. We have to be able to read the defense. Our opponents scout us and will take away our first option. We have to be like a quarterback reading the option and take the best choice.
“We have a tendency to walk the ball up the court. I want us to run into the offense and get into it quicker. I’m encouraging them to pick up the pace, and look for opportunities to drive the ball or get the ball inside. We need somebody to be effective down low, whether it’s Alonzo Lane or Dionisio Gomez.”
A go-to scorer:
“If we had a guy we felt like at crunch time could score, other teams would have to focus on him and it would ease our offensive struggles. We have guys that have done that, but no one has done it consistently. Michael Jones had some games where he was on fire. Kendrick Davis had some good games, Jonathon Modica has done it in different games and Eric Ferguson did it early in the year.”
Areas to improve:
“I just think about how poorly we’ve shot free throws and that we don’t take care of the ball. Those are two things I think we can control. We shot a poor percentage (against Auburn), but what bothers me more is the 24 turnovers. Those are possessions where we don’t even give ourselves a chance to score.”
“I’m still toying with it. I don’t know if I want to go with a lineup that’s more offensive or defensive.”
