Stan Heath Press Conference Transcript

Stan Heath Press Conference Transcript<br>
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. The following is a partial transcript of Stan Heath’s press conference.
Stan Heath:

“We are ready to get back to work I looked at Tennessee and they are very diverse. Everything goes through Slay, but you can’t overlook Higgins, Crump or the young guys like Watson and Holden. Those guys are doing a great job for them. They are the leading field goal percentage team in the league right now and second best in three point shooting. Our defense is going to be challenged in this game, and when they need a play they can go to Slay. He has a long wingspan with great hands and can carry the team. Outside of maybe Kentucky they are playing the best basketball in the conference.

“You can’t really stop Slay, but I hope we slow him down. They have a lot of other guys on their team that can hurt us, and can make a lot of difficult match ups for us. Tennessee starts three small guards that we will have to match up with initially.

“Tennessee has the fire power of a Georgia, but they have one of the most diverse offensive teams I have seen. The one true pattern I have noticed is Slay getting the ball. They try to give teams different looks by switching defenses.”

Mississippi State recap:

“We didn’t bring our complete game against Mississippi State, and we don’t have the luxury to have a day off. We have problems sometimes scoring because we don’t have a lot of scoring power. If the other team is shooting well and we are not, then we put ourselves in a difficult position. I think our team rebounded in the second half by outscoring Mississippi State and playing much better defense. We got down a little early on in the game. The first two steps are so critical and we were waiting to see, and with Austin it is already too late. Winston went 3-4 from the three and Austin hit a three.

“We need other people to step up. We can’t just count on Modica to be our only offensive power. We don’t need to just be focused on offense and forget to get back on defense. We had a couple of positives in that game though, by shooting eighty percent from the free throw line and only having 13 turnovers for the game.”

Second Half of the SEC and Improvement:

“The first half of the SEC took us some time to get acclimated. At the same time we had to get better in weak areas such as free throws. We have improved a lot during the season by going up in percentage in field goals and free throws. We had a set back against Mississippi State, but overall we have done a lot of improvement. The league is much more aggressive with man-on-man defensive pressure. It makes it hard to enter in on your offense. As we become a better team, we will develop better ball handling and passing. Some of it will be the ability to handle pressure on the road. Our goal for the second half is to win games.

“If you look at free throws and turnovers we have improved a lot. In rebounding we have stayed consistent throughout.”
