Stan Heath Press Conference – Tulsa

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas’ basketball team returns to action on Tuesday with a 7:05 p.m. road game at Tulsa. The game is being televised by ARSN. The Razorbacks are 6-3. Tulsa is 4-4, including a 3-0 mark at home. Following is a partial transcript of head coach Stan Heath’s press conference.
“We’ve had some good practices the last few days and we’ve spent that time trying to get our transition game going. Our transition game isn’t where it should be, but at the same time, in the last game we missed 10 layups and 10 free throws. More than anything, we’ve gone back to working on fundamentals, and making layups and free throws under pressure. I think our defense and rebounding has been solid, but our shooting woes have hurt us.
“Tulsa is similar to us. They have some inexperienced guys playing. Jason Parker is a very good guard. He put his name in the Draft then pulled out. We have to contain him. They lost their front line. They were very strong on the front last year. They also lost a couple of guards.
“Tulsa will play hard, especially on defense. They put a lot of pressure on you and try to keep the game in the 60s. Their guard play is good.”
Western Carolina game:
“We held practice the next day – at 12:01 a.m. – and we didn’t have a ball there. That was not an acceptable loss. That’s one that got away. We needed to get something out of it. We got what we needed accomplished.
“I think our attitude will be a little different the next time we play a game people assume we are going to win.
“It’s a disappointing loss, but it’s not the end of the season. In 2000, we won the national championship (at Michigan State) but we lost to Wright State during the regular season.”
“We’re not shooting the ball from range very well right now either. Layups and free throws are high percentage shots. Plus, we had 20 turnovers against a team that doesn’t really pressure you. I feel like our shots will eventually fall.”
“All of the guys have been busting their butts. I’ll talk to the staff today or on Monday and make a decision on our top even or eight players. This isn’t football. We have to have guys that can play both sides of the ball. There’s a lot of parity on my team. Don’t be surprised if Preston Cranford is out there because he can shoot.”
“He has been practicing. He gets a little sting every now and then. He’s definitely an asset for us and we’re glad to have him back. We don’t truly have an inside presence at the level we need one, but he’s our best answer. He has the ability to catch it in the paint and finish a play. He’s been wanting to get out there for a while and he’s still getting into the swing of things.”
