FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas is proud to announce former Razorback punter Steve Cox as the honorary captain for the Arkansas-Florida football game on Saturday.
The University of Arkansas Men’s Athletic Department will present an honorary captain for each Fayetteville home game this season. Each honorary captain will be honored prior to the game on the field, recognized on the SmartVision and will accompany the Razorback captains to midfield for the coin toss. Both honorary captains will also appear at the Fuji Film Legends Tent in the SBC Trough 90 minutes before game time.
Cox lettered for the Razorbacks in 1979 and 1980 as a punter and led the Southwest Conference in punting both years with averages of 43.8 and 46.5. Cox’s 1980 average was also tops in the NCAA.
Cox owns the school record for the longest punt when he boomed an 86-yard punt against the Texas Longhorns in 1980. In that same game, Cox set the school record for the best average for punts in a game with a 70-yard average.
Selected to the University of Arkansas All-Century team in 1994, Cox played in the NFL for Cleveland and Washington.
