Surin/Huxley Upset Highlights Day For @RazorbackWTEN

FAYETTEVILLE — Kimberley – Ann Surin and Brittany Huxley got the day started with a doubles upset, but the No. 44 University of Arkansas women’s tennis team (5-3, 0-0 SEC) fell in a 5-2 loss to No. 24 Oklahoma (6-1, 0-0 Big 12) at the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center on Friday.

The upset of No. 31 Whitney Richie and Mia Lancaster by Surin and Huxley helped the Razorbacks pull even at 1-1 in the doubles point and set up a dramatic finish. The Sooners were able to hang on and prevail, however, as Hermon Brhane and Zita Engbrokscame away withan 8-7 (8-6) win over Yang Pang and Oleksandra Shkorupeieva at No. 3 doubles.

"We have plenty of positive things to take out of this match," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "Full credit to Oklahoma for earning a hard-fought victory. Oklahoma is a veteran team and they are a team that I believe will compete for the Big 12 title."

The upset by Surin and Huxleymarked the first win over a ranked opponent by a Razorback doubles pairing since Claudine Paulson and Segou Jonker upset No. 29 Lauren Mira and Courtney Colton of Vanderbilt on March 3, 2013.

In singles play, Surin added to her doubles victory with a win in singles at No. 4, as the sophomore from Montreal, Canada, grinded out a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 defeat of Morgan Chumney.

Shkorupeieva redeemed her earlier doubles loss and was able to exact revenge with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Abbi Melrose. The freshman from Odessa, Ukraine, improved to 5-2 in singles play this season, includinga 5-1 recordplaying at No. 6.

Shannon Hudson suffered just her second loss of the season in singles, despite a spirited effort against ITA Central Region No. 2 Hermon Brhane. The freshman from Virginia Beach, Va., entered having won two straight matches, but was defeated 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 for Arkansas.
