Swimmers shine at Santa Clara Grand Prix

FAYETTEVILLE – Five members of the University of Arkansas swimming and diving team set at least one career best time apiece at the Santa Clara International Grand Prix, June 11-14, in Santa Clara, Calif. The Razorbacks were led at the meet by Yi-Ting Siow who won the ‘C’ heat final of the 100 breast with a Malaysian national record time of 1:11.62 and Erica Totten who set a Philippine record in the 400 individual medley, finishing 37th with a time of 5:00.31.

"Overall, it was a fantastic mid-season competition for our girls,” head Arkansas coach Jeff Poppell said. “Each of our girls set at least one personal best time at the meet and several in-season best performances.

“The competition featured some of the world’s best competition including the likes of Olympic Gold Medalists and World Record Holders, Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Stephanie Rice from Australia, and Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe. Our Razorback swimmers put on a very strong showing at the meet and performed exceedingly well in each night’s finals sessions."

Joining Siow in the 100 breast was Leah Pierce, who finished with a time of 1:13.47, in the ‘B’ heat final, in eighth place.

Continuing their dominance in the pool, Razorbacks Jamie Marks and Alison Templin placed in the top five in the 1500 meter freestyle race. Marks finished the race in third place with a time of 16:51.15 with Templin close behind in fifth place with a time of 17:00.56.

Marks’ success continued with a fifth place finish in the ‘B’ final of the 200 fly in a time of 2:15.15 and a time of 8:53.82 in the 800 free, in 14th place.

Templin also placed in the 800 free with a time of 8:56.23, in 17th place.

In the 200 breast, Siow and Pierce once again put in strong performances, Siow placing fourth in the ‘B’ heat final with a time of 2:31.81 and Pierce coming in sixth in the ‘C’ final with a time of 2:36.81.

Closing out her solid Grand Prix showing, Siow also finished the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.88, in third place in the ‘B’ heat final.

The sixth Razorback to compete at the Grand Prix meet was Lynette Ng. Ng, who owns the Arkansas record in the 100 back, finished 72nd in the prelims of the race with a time of 59.00. Ng also finished 69th in the 100 back (1:07.73) and 53rd in the 50 free (27.50).
