Taylor Earns Coaching Award
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Arkansas women’s golf coach Shauna Taylor was selected as the 2017-18 Golf Pride Grips WGCA Central Region Coach of the Year the organization announced today.
The award is the first regional coach of the year honor for Taylor and it comes on the heels of her second Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year honor this season.
Taylor guided Arkansas to a record-setting season that included the program’s first SEC and NCAA Regional titles. Arkansas won seven team events behind the play of junior Maria Fassi who won six individual titles.
Taylor and the Razorbacks opened the season tying the NCAA record with a 41-under par 823 at the Mason Rudolph Championship. Four of the five players were under par paced by Fassi who posted a school record 16-under 200 (65-71-64) to win. Alana Uriell was 12-under, Dylan Kim was 10-under and Cara Gorlei finished 3-under at the event.
Arkansas went on to play the four-event fall schedule 92-under par winning three of the tournaments. The spring season was equally successful as Arkansas notched four team wins and had two runner-up finishes. The team was ranked as high at No. 1 in the country and entered the NCAA Championship at No. 2.
The Razorbacks ended the year 10th in the nation with three players, Fassi, Uriell and Kim, earning WGCA All-America honors.
This week, Taylor is at Shoal Creek Golf Club cheering on three current and two former Razorbacks who are taking part in the U.S. Women’s Amateur. Fassi, Kim and Kaylee Benton are competing as amateurs while LPGA Tour pros Stacy Lewis and Gabriela Lopez are among the headliners.
