NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Winning five-of-six singles matches and two doubles matches, the 40th-ranked Arkansas men’s tennis team (3-3, 1-2 SEC) picked up a decisive victory over Vanderbilt (4-5, 0-2 SEC) 6-1 in a key Southeastern Conference match up Sunday afternoon.
“We final put it all together,” head coach Robert Cox said. “I am very proud of the way that we made things happen in singles and especially in doubles. The guys really know how to step up on the road.”
The Hogs were able to overcome their woes in doubles, winning the double’s point from the Commodores. Oskar Johansson and Eduardo Pacheco began the surge winning at No. 2 doubles 8-4. No. 3 doubles team of Chris Campbell and Brad Berry clinched the victory 9-8 after a two-point tiebreak.
Going into singles matches, Johansson, who is ranked ninth nationally, easily defeated Andrew Nisker 6-3, 6-3. Johansson is undefeated at 3-0 in SEC singles matches.
Henrik Tofft continued his dominance at the No. 2 position with a straight-set win over Bill McGugin 6-3, 6-3. Tofft is 5-1 in singles matches this season.
Tiago Azevedo and Aleksey Bubis picked up their first SEC singles victories in the match.
The Hogs will return home for a Feb. 27th home match in Bentonville, against Tulane. The match will begin at noon.
