The road to Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas is set to host the 2010 Southeastern Conference Softball Tournament, May 13-15 at Bogle Park.

The three-day event will feature the top eight of 11 teams in the SEC, each team qualifying based on their conference winning percentage. Six of a possible eight teams have already clinched spots in the tournament: Alabama, Florida, LSU, Georgia, Tennessee and Kentucky.

The top five teams in the SEC currently rank in the top 25 nationally according to the ESPN/USA Softball and USA Today/NFCA collegiate softball polls released Tuesday. The Crimson Tide and Gators currently find themselves in the top five.

Arkansas (28-25, 10-15 SEC) is currently in seventh place overall in the conference after taking two of three from Ole Miss at home over the weekend. The Razorbacks will wrap up conference play this weekend when they travel to Auburn, Ala., for a three-game series with the Tigers.

Auburn (8-17 SEC) is currently in eighth place with Ole Miss (7-17) and Mississippi State (7-17) tied for the ninth spot.

Ole Miss takes on Kentucky in Oxford, Miss., this weekend while Mississippi State hosts Alabama.

The Razorbacks need to win a game and not lose three in order to clinch a spot in the field of eight. Even if the series was shortened due to weather and Arkansas dropped a pair of games, it would still qualify for the tournament.

This weekend’s games against Auburn will be broadcast on KXUA Fayetteville (88.3 FM) and ArkansasRazorbacks.com, which will also carry live stats for the entire series. Sunday’s series finale will be televised regionally on FSN2 including Fox Sports Southwest, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
