DES MOINES, Iowa – At the end of day one of the heptathlon at the 103rd Drake Relays, Makeba Alcide is in third place with a total of 3,409 points. She established two career bests through the first four events of the two-day competition. The 2012 Drake Relays runs through Saturday evening at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.

Alcide began the day with a personal-best performance of 13.96 in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time was worth 984 points and represented the first time she dipped below the 14-second mark. In the second event of the day, the high jump, Alcide finished second overall with a final clearance of 1.72m/5-7.75 which added 879 points to her total.

Her second personal-best effort came in the shot put with a day’s best throw of 12.42m/40-9, good for 689 points. It was the first 40-foot throw of her outdoor career. Alcide closed out the day with a 25.33 showing and 857 points at 200 meters. She finished sixth overall in that event.

Alcide’s total of 3,409 points is the second-highest day one total of her career. At the 2011 SEC Championships in Athens, Ga., she had 3,458 points at the end of four events. Alcide is looking to better her season-best total of 5,182 points which she scored at Texas Relays in March. At the end of day one, Peaches Roach-Findlay is the heptathlon leader with 3,611 points. She is competing unattached.

The heptathlon concludes Thursday with action in the long jump, javelin and 800 meters. Arkansas’ only other action on day two of the Drake Relays is with Diane Robison at 5,000 meters. Thursday also marks the Razorbacks start of competition at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia with the pole vault and high jump. Tina Sutej is the two-time defending champion at the prestigious event.

Meet coverage during the weekend is set to include live results and an interactive blog, which begins Friday at noon (CT).
