FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas co-head gymnastics coaches Mark and Rene Cook announced the retirement of junior Kathy Thompson recently.
Thompson missed the 2004-05 season after suffering an Achilles tendon tear in the fall before competition began.
“Kathy has retired,” said Rene Cook, “but she will continue to be a part of our family and a part of this University. “We wish her all the best in the future.”
Thompson emerged as a team contributor from the first meet of her freshman season vaulting her way to a school record. Thompson began the year as a three-event (vault, bars, floor) competitor reducing that to a pair of events (vault, floor) mid-season. Thompson flirted near the 9.90 mark on vault early finally reaching the record-setting mark for the first time at No. 10 Missouri Feb. 13, in the team’s first road meet of the year. She equaled the record-setting mark at the NCAA Regional meet at Arizona April 3.
Thompson tallied a career-best 9.80 on bars against No. 29 Kentucky in one of two appearances on the event and posted a career-best 9.925 twice on floor. Thompson’s name appears several times in the top 10 in the Arkansas record books on vault.
Thompson also earned National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women Academic All-America honor in 2004.
