Three In The Top Three

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 5 Arkansas men’s track and field squad placed three student-athletes in the top-three of their respective invitational events during day one of the Tyson Invitational on Friday evening at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

All-American sprinters Kenzo Cotton (60), Obi Igbokwe (400) and Eric Janise (400) all raced to season’s best performances in front of their home crowd, elevating their rank on the NCAA indoor performance list.

“We had a great day overall,” assistant coach Travis Geopfert said. “Some big personal and season bests by a lot of people that climbed high into the SEC and NCAA rankings. Great day across the board, but in particular with our quarter-milers. It was a lot of fun seeing Eric Janise have that breakthrough he deserves. Obi [Igbokwe] ran great and finished strong to show there is even more in the tank. Larry Donald also did a great job with a huge personal best. In the field events, Andreas [Trajkovski] and Travonn [White] did a great job as well, climbing the NCAA rankings with season’s bests. As a staff, we are very pleased.”

Cotton opened the day in the 60-meter prelims, posting a time of 6.68, earning the automatic qualifier as the winner of heat two. He went on to drop .03 seconds from his time in the finals, placing third with 6.65 to hold strong as one of the top-16 best short sprinters in the country.

Racing out of two different sections of the 400 invitational, Igbokwe and Janise dug deep into their speed endurance reserves and were both rewarded in major ways, posting new career bests of 46.16 and 46.29, respectively, for second and third place.

Out in Iowa, cross country All-American Jack Bruce was Arkansas’ top finisher at the Iowa State Classic, bettering his personal best in the 3,000 by almost 22 seconds with a time of 7:58.22 to place seventh. Iowa Central transfer Andrew Ronoh also collected a PR, clocking 13:59.54 in the 5,000 to finish among the top-20 best in the field.
