Three Razorbacks named to all-tournament team

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas sophomore pitchers Barrett Astin and Ryne Stanek, along with sophomore infielder Dominic Ficociello were named to the all-tournament team for the 2012 Houston College Classic, as announced late Sunday night. Astin, a Forrest City, Ark., native, pitched in relief against Texas Tech and Texas, earning the save in both victories. Astin pitched four scoreless innings on the weekend, giving up just one hit and striking out eight. For the season, Astin has appeared in five games and has a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA and three saves. In 12 innings of work, Astin has allowed just two hits and struck out 18 batters. He’s holding the opposition to a .054 batting average. Ficociello finished the weekend in Houston going 3-for-11 at the plate with two RBI and three runs scored. The Fullerton, Calif., native had one hit in each game and extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 13. Defensively, Ficociello was flawless in the field, not committing an error in 27 chances. Ficociello is batting .383 on the season with a homer and is tied for the team lead with 13 RBI. Ficociello has yet to commit an error this season, handling all 125 defensive chances. Stanek earned the win in Arkansas’ tournament-opening game against Texas Tech. The Overland Park, Kan., native struck out a career-high seven and allowed just one run in seven innings of work. The victory improved Stanek to 3-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.59. Dating back to last season, the sophomore pitcher has won his last five starts. No. 4 Arkansas was one of three teams to finish the weekend in Houston with a 2-1 record. The Razorbacks defeated Texas Tech on Friday, 3-1. After a loss to Houston on Saturday, Arkansas defeated No. 21 Texas, 7-3, on Sunday. The Razorbacks are back in action on Friday when they face Binghamton in the first of a three-game series. The series with the Bearcats opens Arkansas’ second 10-game homestand of the season. Game times for the weekend series are set for 3:05 p.m. on Friday, 1:05 p.m. on Saturday and 12:05 p.m. on Sunday.
