Tony Vitello meets with the media

FAYETTEVILLE — Recently hired University of Arkansas assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Tony Vitello met with the media on Tuesday to discuss joining the Razorback baseball program. Vitello, who joined the program after spending the previous three seasons at TCU, expressed his excitement for becoming a part of the Arkansas coaching staff. “I’m elated to be joining the Razorback program,” Vitello said. “To say I’m excited is an understatement. There’s a great tradition here that I’ve been very aware of because of where I’m from and just competing in college baseball in general.” Vitello is considered one of the top recruiters in college baseball, having brought a pair of top 15 recruiting classes to TCU and three top 25 recruiting classes in his eight seasons at Missouri. Vitello discussed what he looks for in a player when out on the recruiting trail. “You want your team to be as athletic as possible,” Vitello said. “It’s about scoring runs in college baseball now. If you have players that can steal second base, lay down a bunt for a hit or track down fly balls in the outfield, it helps you. The more athletic you are, the better.” Head coach Dave Van Horn also visited with the media on Tuesday and discussed what made Vitello the ideal candidate for the job. “I’ve been watching Tony for a long time,” Van Horn said. “I knew if he kept up the pace he was on in his career that he was going to be in demand as an assistant coach because of his recruiting connections. I feel like he’s very meticulous and organized. We’re on the same page in a lot of areas. I really feel like it’s a good fit for our program.”
