Top Times Secured In Frigid Temperatures

Arkansas Spring Final Results

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior Payton Stumbaugh made her 2017 debut for the third-ranked Arkansas women’s track and field team as the fastest finisher in the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash at the Arkansas Spring Invitational in Fayetteville.

Forced to take a medical redshirt during the indoor season due to an injury sustained after the 2016 outdoor national meet, Stumbaugh returned with a vengeance and appeared undisturbed by the poor weather conditions. The Springdale native cruised to a phenomenal opening time in the high hurdles of 13.21 which placed her at No. 3 in the national standings. She also landed herself a spot on the NCAA West region 200-meter top-20 list with her 23.76-second victory.

The Razorbacks also saw success in the 4-x-100-meter relay off the heels of Kelsey Herman, Sunkietra McCallister, Jada Baylark and Kiara Parker. The winning quartet posted a time of 45.23, slightly edging out Arkansas’ second team of Taliyah Brooks, Stumbaugh, Brianna Swinton and Tamara Kuykendall.

Swinton returned to the track later in the evening as the lead leg of Arkansas’ 4-x-400 relay team. The foursome which included Ceara Watson, Damajahnee Birch and Leigha Brown closed out the night as the top collegiate squad in the event, second only to the Razorback Elite Track Club (RETC). The RETC team featured ProHogs Sparkle McKnight and Chrishuna Williams who both won individual titles of their own in the 400 hurdles and 400 open, respectively.

Fellow ProHog Alex Gochenour won the long jump with a mark of 6.01m/19-8 1/4. Gochenour was the only competitor in the field over six meters.

Additional Notable Individual Performances
• Three Hogs under 10 minutes in the 3,000 (Abby Gray, Logan Bishop, Rachel Nichwitz)
• Sophomore Kiara Parker captured 100 title (11.73)
• Freshman Carina Viljoen captured 800 title (2:10.58)
• Sophomore Sydney Brown captured 1,500 title (4:24.46)
• Sophomore Lexi Weeks captured pole vault title (4.25m/13-11 1/4)

“Payton Stumbaugh announced her return in a big way and stole the day today,” head coach Lance Harter said. “She had some huge performances considering the conditions weren’t so ideal. We also had some huge breakthroughs with Abby Gray in the 3,000 and Sydney Brown in the 1,500. Lexi Weeks also did a great job in the vault in miserable conditions. We just did an excellent job all around especially considering we didn’t have a full team competing. We’ll add them to the fold next week and I think we’ll definitely be a factor [at the NCAA meet] this year.”

The Razorbacks will split up next weekend as the sprints and jumps groups will head to Austin, Texas for the Texas Relays while the distance crew will journey to the Palo Alto, California for the Stanford Invitational.
