FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas center Darian Townes has earned honorable mention freshman All-America honors by Rivals.com. Rivals selected three five-player teams and listed 12 others are honorable mention, placing Townes among the top 27 freshmen in the nation. Townes, from Alexandria, Va., is second on the team with averages of 10.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and a .522 field goal percentage (119-228). His free-throw percentage of .683 (56-82) is third on the club. In conference play, Townes’ numbers improved to 11.4 points and 5.1 rebounds. He has two double-doubles this year and 16 double-figure scoring games, the most for an Arkansas post player since Derek Hood had 26 in 1999. His double-doubles came at No. 16 Alabama (14 points, 10 rebounds) and at Auburn (18 points, 10 rebounds). Townes is the third UA freshman in the last two years to earn All-America recognition. Last year, Ronnie Brewer made the Rivals.com second team and the College Basketball News third team while Olu Famutimi was an honorable mention choice by Rivals.
