Track Hogs Set to Host NCAA Mideast Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas Razorback track and field will host the 2008 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, Friday-Saturday, May 30-31, at John McDonnell Field.

Field events will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday with running events starting at 3 p.m. On Saturday, field events will begin at 11 a.m. with running events following at 5 p.m. Gates will open one hour prior to the first event. Fans can park in Lots 44, 56, 72, 73 and 73A. Spectators can enter John McDonnell Field through the northwest corner gates. Visit www.hogwired.com for complete details of the championships.

While Arkansas hosts the Mideast Championships, Florida State is hosting the East Championships, Nebraska the Midwest Championships and Cal State Northridge the West Championships.

The Hogs finished eighth with 31 points at the event in 2007 in Columbia, Mo. LSU won the team championship with 71 points.

The Razorbacks won the regional crown the first three years of the current NCAA format. Arkansas won the initial Mideast Regional in Columbus, Ohio in 2003 before taking the crown again in Baton Rouge, La., in 2004. In 2005, Arkansas won the Mideast Regional by a record 26.5 point margin in Bloomington, Ind.

Arkansas will send a total of 21 student-athletes to the 2008 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships to compete in 11 different events. A quintet of Razorbacks will compete in multiple events this weekend. Alain Bailey (4x100M, Long Jump), Peter Kosgei (3KSC, 5,000M), Daniel Quinn (Long Jump, Triple Jump), Mychael Stewart (Long Jump, 100M and 4x100M) and J-Mee Samuels (100M, 200M and 4x100M) will have two busy days of multiple events.

A top five finish in any individual event and a top three finish in a relay automatically qualifies for the NCAA Championships, in Des Moines, Iowa, next month. To be considered for an at-large bid, an individual athlete must finish sixth through 12th and relays must finish fourth through eighth.
