Tubert goes low

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — University of Arkansas sophomore Emily Tubert fired an even par 72 and is tied for 16th overall after first round action at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. Friday. Tubert, a Burbank, Calif., native began play on the back nine and made the turn at three under with birdies on 10, 13 and 14. Teammate sophomore Emma Lavy also finished strong carding a two-over 74 and is tied for 43rd in the field. Lavy, a Fayetteville, Ark., native was plus-three at the turn and picked up two more strokes on the front nine but birdied three of her last four holes to count 74. “Emily and Emma were very solid today,” Arkansas head coach Shauna Estes-Taylor said. “Emma birdied three of her last four holes and if we can get everyone firing like that, we will be in good shape. This golf course allows for birdie opportunities and our goal for tomorrow and Sunday is to go out and attack the golf course.” Junior Victoria Vela shot 77 as did freshman Audrey Monssoh. They are tied for 64 while sophomore transfer Emily Podzielinski is tied for 86th with an 80. As a team, the Razorbacks are 15th in the 18-team field counting a 300 today. Tenth-ranked Alabama leads the field with 281 followed by No. 8 LSU and No. 90 Wake Forest tied for second with 284. The rest of the top five includes No. 2 Auburn in third with 287 followed by No. 24 South Carolina with 289. The rest of the field includes No. 6 North Carolina in sixth with 290, No. 26 North Carolina State and No. 29 Michigan State tied for seventh with 291, No. 40 Tennessee in ninth with 293 and No. 46 Tulane and No. 18 Georgia tied for 10th with 295. Louisville is 12thwith 296, No. 5 Virginia is 13 with 297, No. 11 Duke is 14th with 298, No. 36 Arkansas is 15th with 300, No. 48 Coastal Carolina is 16 with 304 and No. 60 UTC and No. 47 Notre Dame round out the field with 307. “The course length is optimal for scoring,” Estes-Taylor said. “We have to hit good tee shots and keep it in play and we’ll score. I know that if we tidy up a few little things we can play much better in the next two rounds.”
