Tulsa and Oklahoma State take Finals at Central Regional

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The finals of the 2008 Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships went to schools from Oklahoma in both singles and doubles on Monday, as Arnau Brugues of Tulsa beat Arkansas’ Matt Hogan 6-2, 6-4 in the singles final before Nathan Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov from Oklahoma State rolled over Nebraska freshmen Maor Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim, 8-2.

Brugues, the 6th-ranked singles player in the nation, was never in trouble against Hogan, his powerful serves and hard-hitting strokes flying to the edges of the court just out of the reach of his opponent. Hogan managed to hang on in the second set but, once again, Brugues found another gear and powered past to win the set and the match.

In doubles, the No.10-ranked team of Byrnes and Nedovyesov steamrolled their opponents easily. Nedovyesov, the No.1 singles player, overwhelmed the competition with his dominating serves and precision strokes and led the Cowboys to an easy win.

Both Brugues and Hogan qualified for ITA National Indoor Championships with their berths into the final match and, with their win on Monday, Byrnes and Nedovyesov will be added to the doubles draw at the championships held Nov.6-9 in Charlottesville, Va.
