Tyson Gay Earns SEC Athlete of the Week Honors
BY ANDRES FOCIL
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After breaking the UA record in the 60-meter dash, junior transfer Tyson Gay was named the Southeastern Conference’s Athlete of the Week as announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon.
“It’s a good start to what is hopefully going to be a great season,” Arkansas sprints and hurdles coach Lance Brauman said. “This is something that he’ll be able to build off of and use it to keep himself going. That was his first time to run as a Razorback and compete in the SEC, so I’m really proud of him.”
At the Arkansas Invitational on Jan. 16, Gay started off his career as a Razorback on a strong note when he set a new school record in the 60-meter dash with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 6.65. His time was also good enough to earn first place honors at the meet and currently leads the SEC. Gay’s time broke the previous record of 6.67, which was held by Ahmad Carroll in 2003. Additionally, Gay had not run a 60-meter dash in almost two years, which makes his performance all the more impressive.
Besides breaking the 60-meter dash record, Gay was also a member of the 4×400-meter relay team that captured first place. Gay and the other Razorbacks put together a time of 3:10.43.
Gay and the rest of the Arkansas squad will compete in their second home meet of the season on Jan. 23-24. The Razorback Invitational will go from 5-8:05 p.m. on Friday and 3-6:25 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $5 for each day of competition. Students with ID’s and children under 12 are free.
