USTFCCCA All-America list announced

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas women’s track and field team collected 11 All-America accolades Monday with the release of the 2011 outdoor honors by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The team finished in the 14th place with 18 points at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

The Razorbacks have 11 All-America honorees spread among nine student-athletes in seven events. Regina George (400m, 4x400m) and Shelise Williams (4x400m) led Arkansas’ charge with two selections each. The rest of the All-American recognition went to Makeba Alcide (heptathlon), Gwendolyn Flowers (4x400m), Kristen Gillespie (1,500m), Brittany Hyter (400m hurdles), Whitney Jones (4x400m), Ivanique Kemp (100m hurdles) and Tina Sutej (pole vault).

First-team honors went to George (sixth place, 400m), Hyter (seventh place, 400mH), Sutej (second place, pole vault) and Williams (fourth place, 400m). Hyter’s selection is the program’s first in the 400-meter hurdles since the 2001 season.

Williams now has five outdoor All-America honors to her credit. She will end her Razorback career as an 11-time All-American, combing indoor and outdoor awards. George runs her career outdoor total to four, while Jones and Sutej each earn their second outdoor All-America nods. First-time outdoor selections go to Alcide, Flowers, Gillespie, Hyter and Kemp.

As a conference, the Big 12 racked up 58 First-Team All-America nods, followed by the SEC (51) and Pac-10 (26). The Big 12 also had the biggest carry on the women’s side with 48 first-team honorees, followed by the Pac-10 (39) and SEC (38).

First-team honors were awarded to those who placed in the championships’ top eight or were a member of an eight-person final. Second-team awards were handed out to those who earned final classification between ninth and 16th place. Others who participated earned honorable mention.

With the collegiate season in the books, several Razorbacks will turn their attention to national and international competition during the summer months. The USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 23-26 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The junior national championships will be held concurrently.
