FAYETTEVILLE – In a sweep of the weekly Southeastern Conference honors, Miranda Walker and Stephanie Brown, members of the University of Arkansas women’s cross country team, have been recognized for their respective performances at last weekend’s UC Riverside Invitational. Walker has been named the Female Athlete of the Week while Brown was picked as the Female Freshman of the Week.
As Arkansas’ top finisher, Walker paced the Razorbacks to the team title at the UC Riverside Invitational. The senior runner picked up a second-place individual finish in a time of 16:51.1. With that mark, Walker shaved more than 32 seconds off her career-best 5K time; previous time of 17:23.64 was set during the 2009 season at the Missouri Southern Stampede. She has been Arkansas’ top finisher in the team’s first two races of the year.
Brown posted a fifth-place finish at UC Riverside and was the third finisher for the Razorbacks. She navigated the 5K course in a time of 17:13.7. It was her second top-five result in as many races as she helped Arkansas to its second team title of the year. Brown was the top freshman runner in the race of 179 competitors. The honor is the second of the season for Brown.
Behind four top-10 individual finishes, the Razorbacks out-distanced the UC Riverside field with 30 team points. All seven of Arkansas’ runners finished in the top 25. In addition to Walker and Brown, the rest of the team’s top five included Kristen Gillespie (third overall, 16:51.8), Cali George (ninth, 17:28.6) and Ashley Isham (13th, 17:42.9). Jillian Rosen and Samantha Learch finished in 19th and 25th place, respectively.
In the latest release, the Razorbacks maintain their No. 3 ranking in the South Central Region poll. Arkansas is also receiving votes in the USTFCCCA national poll. With a scheduled off week, the Razorbacks return to action Oct. 1 at the Notre Dame Invitational. The race is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (CT) start in South Bend, Ind., at the Notre Dame Golf Course.
