FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Sophomore right-hander Dominic Taccolini recorded 11 strikeouts and allowed just one run to lead the White team to a 6-2 victory over the Cardinal squad in the opening game of the Cardinal-White Fall World Series Sunday evening in Baum Stadium.
Taccolini came out firing and tossed 7.1 innings of two-hit ball, while striking out 11 batters, including fanning the side twice to earn the win. He struck out the final five batters he faced before Austin Kerns came on in relief.
Junior Rick Nomura came through at the plate for the white team, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Clark Eagan and Tyler Spoon tallied two hits apiece.
The Cardinal team recorded five hits in the game, including two off the bat of Blake Baxendale who used a second-inning double and a ninth-inning RBI single to pace the offense. Alex Gosser recorded the only other RBI for the Cardinal squad with a groundout in the second inning.
Sophomore right-hander Zach Jackson suffered the loss after lasting 4.1 innings and giving up four hits and four runs.
The Cardinal and White series returns Monday at 4 p.m. at Baum Stadium. Freshman right-hander Keaton McKinney will start for the White and redshirt freshman right-hander Parker Sanburn will get the nod for the Cardinal.
