White stays alive with 5-2 win

FAYETTEVILLE – Jake Wise went 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBI, while the bullpen threw 2.1 shutout innings to lead White to a 5-2 win in game four of the Cardinal-White series on Wednesday afternoon at Baum Stadium.

The White team stays alive with the win, trimming Cardinal’s lead in the series to 3-1. Game five is scheduled for Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

Wise led the White team at the plate, hitting a home run for the second straight game and finishing the contest a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Conor Costello was 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Brian Anderson also drove in two runs.

Tim Carver had a pair of hits to lead Cardinal at the plate. Franco Broyles drove in a run, while Matt Vinson reached base three times with a hit and two walks.

Jeff Harvill started for White and earned the victory, giving up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Cardinal starter Landon Simpson was saddled with the loss after surrendering four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings. Barrett Astin came in with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh to retire Sam Bates and earn the save.

Costello pitched well in relief for White, tossing two scoreless frames with a strikeout. Jacob Morris pitched out of the bullpen for Cardinal and threw a perfect inning with two strikeouts.

White struck first with two runs in the top of the first. Jacob Mahan walked to start the game. Mahan then stole second and moved to third when the catcher’s throw to second went into the outfield. A sacrifice fly by Anderson to center field scored Mahan. Matt Reynolds and Eric Fisher then drew back-to-back walks. White then attempted a double steal, but Fisher was caught stealing at second base for the second out of the inning. Wise came through with a two-out RBI triple to right-center field, scoring Reynolds to put White up 2-0.

Cardinal trimmed the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the second. Vinson led off the inning with a single and then moved to second on a wild pitch. A fly out to center field by Franco Broyles advanced Vinson to third. With two out, Vinson crossed the plate on another wild pitch.

A run in the bottom of the third for Cardinal evened the game at two. Ficociello hit a one-out double to left field and then moved to third on a two-out wild pitch. Morris walked and Vinson was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. A walk to Broyles scored Ficociello to tie the game.

White regained the lead with a run in the top of the fourth. With one out, Wise launched a solo home run into the Hog Pen in left field to put White in front 3-2.

White added another run in the top of the fifth. Costello doubled down the right field line to start the inning and then moved to third on an infield single by Mahan. A sacrifice fly to center field by Anderson scored Costello for White’s fourth run of the game.

White closed the scoring with a run in the top of the sixth. Wise singled to center to lead the inning off. Jimmy Bosco then hit a chopper back to the mound. Trent Daniel’s throw to second was errant, allowing Wise to reach second and Bosco to reach first. A sacrifice bunt by Joe Serrano moved the runners up to second and third. Costello walked to load the bases and Atkins drew a walk to force in a run to put White in front 5-2.

Cardinal made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. David Masters reached on a fielding error by Reynolds at short to lead off the inning, but was quickly erased on a 4-6-3 double play ball off the bat of Ficociello. Phillips kept the game alive by reaching on a fielding error and Morris advanced him to second with a single to left field. Vinson walked to load the bases with two outs. Bates pinch hit for Broyles and hit a grounder up the middle. Reynolds threw to second to retire Vinson and keep White alive in the series.
