Williams and Walters set to play in Las Vegas
FAYETTEVILLE– The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team faced tough competition at the 2009 Rebel Classic in Las Vegas, Nev on Friday. The Razorbacks posted a 3-6 overall record to conclude the first day of competition. Senior Bradwin Williams and sophomore Matt Walters will compete in the consolation rounds of the UNLV Rebel Classic on Saturday.
“Although we had a tough first day we are learning a lot about ourselves,” Head coach Robert Cox Said. “ It is evident we are still growing as individuals and I am happy we had this opportunity.”
In Flight one, Arkansas Razorback Dmitry Lebedev defeated Maxine Adams of FPU, 6-2, 6-4 before falling in the second round to UNLV’s Mehdi Bouras, 7-5, 6-0. Williams fought hard but fell to Luca Barlocchi of UNLV, 6-4, 6-2. Williams fell in the first set but established his rhythm and power to win the match against NAU’s Patrick Schimmelbauer, 6-7, 6-0, 6-4.
“I am pleased with Dmitry’s performance,” Cox Said. “He played well against a very seasoned player.”
Nikolas Zogaj and Walters competed in the second flight of the Rebel Classic on Friday. Zogaj hammered cross-court forehands in a victory over UNLV’s Attila Toth, 6-4, 6-3. He returned to the court but fell short and eliminated from the tournament in a match against Brian McPhee of Cal Poly, 6-2, 6-2. Teammate Walters lost in a tough match against Arizona’s Pat Metham in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.
On the doubles court, Arkansas faced tough competition losing both doubles matches. Lebedev and Walters fell, 8-4, to Veskiemagi and Ristov of Pacific. Doubles team of Williams and Zogaj fought but lost to Idaho’s Simon and Glukohov, 8-5.
“This tournament is a great learning experience, loaded with quality players” Cox Said. “We are going to continue to improve and finish strong.”
