Women’s Basketball Opponent Preview: New Mexico

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas women’s basketball team continues its series of opponent previews as it counts down to tipoff of the 2013-14 season. Next up on the nonconference schedule for the Razorbacks is the team’s first tournament of the season, the New Mexico Tournament, held in Albuquerque, N.M.

Opponent: New Mexico Lobos (Possible Second Round Matchup)

Date: Nov. 30

Location: The Pit, Albuquerque, N.M.

Series Results: This marks just the third meeting between New Mexico and Arkansas. The Lobos get the best of the most recent matchup, defeating the Razorbacks, 71-66, during the 1999-2000 season.

Last Season: New Mexico finished 17-14 overall last season, going 8-8 and finishing fourth in the Mountain West Conference standings. The No. 5 seed in the Mountain West Tournament, the Lobos defeated fourth-seeded UNLV, 72-59,&to advance to the semifinals, but lost to top-seeded San Diego State, 67-39.

Foe to Know: Sara Halasz, 5-11, Guard, RS Senior. Halasz has overcome back-to-back seasons lost to knee injury to be a focal point of New Mexico. The Ohatchee, Ala., native played in all 31 games last season and started 26 of them, averaging 7.4 points per game and shooting 37.3 percent from the field. Halasz also marked a career high in assists twice last season, recording six versus Wyoming and again against Colorado State.

Youthful Excitement: New Mexico welcomes six freshmen to its team for the 2013-14 season, providing the Lobos with&aped energy, excitement and&depth. Newcomers include Brooke Allemand, Marissa Perry, Alex Lapeyrolerie, Josie Greenwood, Lauren Newman and Kianna Keller. Allemand and Perry&are point guards, Lapeyrolerie provides wing play, Greenwood and Newman will see time at the forward position and Keller aps height to the Lobo frontcourt.&
