NORMAN, Okla. — The University of Arkansas women’s tennis team was represented well during the first day of the Sooner Classic on Friday. Three out of four Razorbacks entered in singles matches found the winners circle, while both doubles teams entered went 3-1 on the day as well.
“This was a very solid opening day for the whole squad,” said head coach Michael Hegarty. "I saw some positive things on every court and at this early stage of the fall it is all about improvement so from that standpoint today was very encouraging.”
In the top singles bracket, sophomore Kelsey Sundaram earned her second victory of the fall over Nikki Sanders of Texas Tech in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. She moves to the quarterfinals of the flight and will face Lutfiana Budiharto of Wichita State on Saturday.
Junior Emily Carbone was entered in the top bracket as well, however, she fell in her first match to the top seed, Marta Lesniak of Southern Methodist, 6-1, 6-1. Carbone now moves to the consolation side of the bracket and will play against Oklahoma’s Tara Eckel.
Throughout the rest of singles action, the Hogs were right at home as sophomore Valentina Starkova won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, over Paula Dinuta of North Texas and freshman Jade Frampton continued her strong start to the fall, winning 6-1, 6-0, over Peta Maree Lancaster of Oklahoma. Both competitors move to the quarterfinals of their respective flight and will vie for a semifinal spot on Saturday.
Over in doubles action in the top bracket, Sundaram and Frampton won their third victory as a team this fall in the first round. They defeated the team of Meredith Burns and Caroline Beaulieu from Tulsa, 8-4. That victory led to a quarterfinal match with Gia McKnight and Selma Salkovic of Depaul. Unfortunately the team fell 8-4.
In that same bracket, the team of Carbone and Starkova won their first doubles match of the day over Lacey Pfilbsen and Valeska Hoath of Portland in a tight contest, 9-8. With the victory, they went on to play the tandem of Barbora Vykydalova and Irina Paraschiv of North Texas in the quarterfinals of doubles flight A. The Razorback team improved on their first match and won their second match easily, 8-2, to earn a spot in the semifinals. In their match on Saturday, they are slated to face a tough Lesniak and Heather Seinbauer team from SMU that has yet to have a close match in the tournament.
There will be plenty of Razorbacks in action on Saturday in both doubles and singles play. All matches will be played at the Headington Family Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.
