Zguns Doubles Team Advance on Tough Day at ITA Region V Championships

TULSA, Okla. Three Arkansas players won their first-round matches, but only one Razorback and a Hog doubles team advanced Friday at the ITA Region V Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.

Senior Adrians Zguns won two matches to advance to the round of 16, scheduled for Saturday morning. In doubles, Senior Matt Roberts and freshmanBlake Strode were victorious in their opener, also moving on to Saturday’s action.

Zguns the region’s 4th-seed and the nation’s 58th-ranked player, took his opening-round match against Eduardo Autran of Arkansas-Little Rock, 7-6(2), 6-2. In the round of 32, Zguns defeated Juan Felipe Diaz of Oklahoma State, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. The Liepaja, Latvia native is 6-1 this fall.

In doubles, tandem of Roberts and Strode teamed up for the first time Friday, defeating Saint Louis’ Michael Limoges and Paul Feder, 8-3. Roberts won this event in 2004 when in doubles, teaming with Imraan Ismail.

Senior Rohan Gajjar, the top seed in region V and No. 31 nationally, won his round of 64 match against Wichita State’s Boris Gubic, 6-2, 6-4. He then fell to Diego Camacho of Tulsa in the round of 32, 7-6, 1-6, 6-4. Gajjar is now 2-2 on the year.

Strode opened his tournament with a, 7-5, 6-2, triumph over Edson Abrao of Arkansas-Little Rock. Strode, seeded 14th, was knocked off by Nebraska’s James Clow, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, in the round of 32. The St. Louis, Mo. product, playing in only his third collegiate tournament, is 8-2.

Roberts, the tournament’s 6th-seed and nation’s 73rd-ranked player, was upset in the round of 64 by Maor Zirkin of Drake, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-2. In the backdraw, Roberts beat Jason Wright of Oklahoma State, 6-2, 6-2.

Freshman Austin King fell in his first-round match to the tournament’s 12th-seed, Federico Soriano of Tulsa, 6-1, 7-6(7). Sophomore Michael Jung was defeated in his first-round match, 6-3, 6-4, by the region’s 5th-seed and nation’s 73rd-ranked player Alexei Ivanov of Oklahoma. King is 6-2 this fall, while Jung dropped his first match in his last nine, and is 9-2.

King and Jung each won their matches in the first round of the backdraw. King defeated Marcos Quieroz of Missouri State, 6-2, 6-2, and Jung knocked off Cuan Farquharson from Oral Roberts, 6-3, 6-1.

In other doubles action, Zguns and Gajjar, the nation’s sixth-ranked doubles duo and the event’s top-seed, were upset in their opening-round contest by Southern Illinois’ Sergio Sanchez and Felipe Villasenor, 8-5. Also, sophomore Jimmy Khougassian and junior Andrei Nicoara were defeated by Oklahoma’s team of Ivanov and Marek Velicka, 8-3.

Zguns takes on Goran Vujaklija of Wichita State Saturday in the round of 16, while Roberts and Strode battle Thiago Dos Santos and Tiago Esperito Santo of Wichita State. In the backdraw, Roberts will face Tulsa’s Andy Connelly, King will take on Dos Santos and Jung will play Abrao.
